Bolton Castle

Bolton Castle is a spectacular mediaeval fortress, preserved in outstanding condition and situated in the heart of Wensleydale, inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park.  Completed in 1399, its scars bear testament to over 600 years of history, including being besieged during the Civil War in 1645 and Mary, Queen of Scots’ imprisonment in 1569.  The castle has never been sold and remains in the private ownership of Lord Bolton.

The castle is a pleasant half-hour’s walk on field paths from Wensleydale Railway’s Redmire station.  Alternatively, the Wensleydale Vintage Bus will drop you off, and pick you up, at the bottom of the road that leads up to the castle.

For dates and times of opening, see www.boltoncastle.co.uk.
